How does HKT promote collaboration among the government and the industry, academic and research sectors to drive innovation and technology development?
Hong Kong possesses a strong foundation in higher education and research, a growing startup ecosystem, and the opportunities arising from the development of the Northern Metropolis and the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park (HSITP) in the Lok Ma Chau Loop, both of which are emerging into major I&T hubs. The city is now at a crucial stage of transforming its research excellence into industrial application with tangible market value.

Against this backdrop, HKT is actively bridging innovation with the market through collaboration among the government, industry, academic and research sectors. Leveraging the Group’s network infrastructure, industry partner ecosystem and large customer base, we provide testing platforms, data environments and go-to-market channels to accelerate the translation of research outcomes into market-ready products and solutions. In doing so, we support Hong Kong’s I&T ecosystem in progressing from research excellence to industrialisation and large-scale deployment.

In April 2026, the Group established the Joint Research and Development Laboratory (the HKT-ASTRI Joint R&D Lab) with the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) in the Lok Ma Chau Loop. The Lab combines research capabilities of academia with the market insights, technology deployment and commercialisation experience of enterprises to jointly develop solutions in areas such as AI, Low Earth Orbit satellites, low-altitude economy, cybersecurity and IoT. Through these initiatives, we work alongside industry players and relevant stakeholders to combat fraud. We also support the SMS Sender Registration Scheme, which helps members of the public identify the source of text messages through registered sender names prefixed with the “#” symbol.

The Group also provides customers with a range of anti-scam measures, including a 24-Hour “Anti-Scam Support” Helpline (WhatsApp), anti-scam specialists at retail outlets, cybersecurity advisory services, real-time scam call alerts, and SMS sender ID verification services. These measures help customers identify suspicious calls and messages at early stage.

Tap & Go, a member of the HKT Group, has also launched the Single Use Card, a one-time virtual prepaid card that immediately expires after successful payment.
